Whiskey was one of my best friends. I talked to whiskey bottles all the time. That is, all the time I was by myself or with Toto, Bucky, or Bulldog. These were the times when I knew I wouldn't have to explain anything to anybody. These guys knew what I was saying to the whiskey bottle and what it meant to me even though I never told them. We would fight almost every day and call each other dumb, but to me they were some real smart guys. The smartest thing about them was that you never had to explain anything to them for them to know it. They just knew it exactly. I had whiskey, and they probably had a good friend like that too, a friend who could tell you if it was okay to go home.

They fall asleep in class. And then, once night comes and the lights go off, they cannot sleep. This is especially true of those who have just arrived. Perhaps it's the lack of city noise or the side effects of their meds or the stress of incarceration - but whatever the cause, insomnia is a widespread problem, one that many get more pills to resolve.
